ten little indian dishes

Read them and weep, all ye who were lusting after my Indian cookbooks.


Pumpkin in Coconut Milk from Solomon, C. The Vegetarian Book Ken Fin 1998

Modifications: None.
Verdict: Nice, but a little subtle.  And not terribly Indian, but I was desperate to cook as many dishes as possible.

Dal Arhar (Toovar) from Verma, N. Gujarati Cook Book (3rd ed) Fusion Books 2003

Modifications: Used chana dal.
Verdict: Very good.


Eggplant and Cherry Tomato Masala from Manfield, C. Fire: a world of flavour Penguin 2008

Modifications: Did not make accompaniments.
Verdict: Delicious.

Alu Bhoone (Sauteed Potatoes) from Singh, D. Indian Cookery Penguin 1974

Modifications: Omitted onion salt.
Verdict: Delicious.


Brinjal Bartha (Eggplant Puree) from Solomon, C. South East Asian Cookbook Hamlyn 1974

Modifications: None.
Verdict: Delicious.


Potato Pakoras from Ray, S. Indian Vegetarian Cooking Burlington Books 1991

Modifications: None.
Verdict: Fabulous.  Easy to eat far too many before dinner.


Paneer Methi Palak from Dalal, T. Low Calorie Healthy Cooking Sanjay & Co 1989

Modifications: Used dried fenugreek instead of fresh.  I've never even seen fresh fenugreek, but I guess it must exist.
Verdict: Lovely flavour.


Hot Mango Chutney from Tepper, S.K. Preserves Made Easy David Tate Desktop Publishing 1993

Modifications: Halved amount of chillies.
Verdict: Still burned my face off with half the chillies.  But delicious.


Cucumber Raita from Baljekar, M. The Ultimate Indian Cookbook Om 2002

Modifications: None.
Verdict: Very nice.  Very soothing next to the chutney.


Garam Masala from Solomon, C. Vegetarian Food Hamlyn 1993

Modifications: None.
Verdict: Glorious aroma.

N.B. photo is pre-grinding.  I'm not prepared to lose teeth over a meal.  Again.
